I read about that I should test the drives .You can use the pre clear plugin but you will have to take them out of the array I . I'm seeing a lot of mentions of SMART tests, but I can't find anywhere that actually shows you how to run a SMART test on your drives. I'm trying to determine which of my disks . Unraid will let you know, whenever a drive’s S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) test encounters any errors. You also have the ability of manually .
SMART monitoring is an ongoing process within the drive's own firmware but you can issue a command (within the GUI it's a click of a button) to run either a short self-test or . Since drives can be accessed while testing, if a min/max read speed exceeds a threshold, the test is re-performed with an increasing threshold to account for drives with bad .

You can use the pre clear plugin but you will have to take them out of the array I believe and make them unassigned devices. Pre clear is the go to method for burning drives in. Most of us .I have a test / trial server setup currently. I am receiving some 16TB refurbed drives today. What's the proper way to test them for errors in the Server prior to using them for data? Hi, Long time reader, first time poster. I recently decided to stop booting from, and writing to, the usb flash drive after two drives has gone bad. There seems to be some information on how to do this, but I could not find any method that .
Step 5 is not that simple as There is no facility built into unRAID to reduce the number of drives in the array while maintaining protection. the only way ito reduce the number of array disks s to use the ‘New Config’ tool with the option to retain current assignments and remove the disk after doing that before starting the array. In an array with 6 drives, a write to any drive triggers a parity write. The writes will be relatively random across the array drives and every one will required a 'read and rewrite' of a block of tracks on the shingled drive to keep the parity aligned. With 6 drives potentially being updated, thats a lot of extra work. Now this is where things get scary. While this drive was being rebuilt, and knowing the aforementioned drive referenced in OP was likely on its way out I watched biting my nails as it attempted to rebuild. About 60% in its rebuild a completely DIFFERENT drive, one of my newest ones completely disconnected without warning.Check Harddrive Speed. The native Linux command hdparm (Hard Disk Parameters) can be used to determine your hard disk drive read speed.. Here is an example of the command: hdparm -tT /dev/hda. You will need to change hda to match the disk you want to check. You will see a two line report with various numbers and timings, but the only one you are interested in .
If you decide to spin down, your hard drive power consumption can go down from 3-8 watts idle on average to 0.4 watts (per hard drive) so depending on how large your Array is, you might see large power efficiency gains when spinning down. Note: spinning down hard drives might show a noticeable lag time in accessing data on spun-down drives.
Mix and match hard drives of any size to build your server and grow your storage capacity. Swap your hardware at any time, or scale into a more complex server set-up. Store your data in an Unraid array for ultimate flexibility Protect your array with optional parity drives for additional peace of mind. Control how your data is split between drives.
They are not a part of the Unraid array and are not mounted at /mnt/disk/ which is for Unraid disk drives. . It is located at /tmp/ and is by the serial number or label of your drive/SMB Mount point. Is it still good practice to pre-clear the drive. If so, then how many times should it run through that process. My Unraid has WD Green 3TB hard drives and I am going to start upgrading them. So of course I will be starting with the Parity drive and working my way up from there. SAME issue caused problem with SMR hard drives stalling the writing process with internal drives in my normal RAID system . Does Unraid have the ability to extent the time to live ( TTL) value so it won't be so quick to mark a hard drive as dead? Seem like that would solve a lot of issues. Give the drive a chance to respond .

Unraid is an operating system that brings enterprise-class features for personal and small business applications. Configure your computer systems to maximize performance and capacity using any combination of OS, storage devices, and hardware.Unraid OS uses drives for different functions: Array devices are your general storage in Unraid. They fall in two categories: parity and non-parity. Parity devices provide fault tolerance in case your array suffers data loss. If you need to replace a faulty drive, these are used to rebuild your array. You can have up to two parity drives.

That being said I'm gonna hijack your thread slightly in case anyone knows of a way to do a full DESTRUCTIVE test as well, similar to the unraid utility (forgot the name) that writes all zeros and then reads all sectors to verify it's getting all zeros.
Also 560,000 "raw read errors" among other errors in the smart data, from a seller that claims " We also test the Drives SMART data for its historic data like too many hours or any attempted failures. Each one of our drives has passed an extensive test process. " Thoughts? for this 2 TB 7200 RPM SATA. By adding a new drive I don't just mean adding a single drive to a running unRAID array with lots of existing drives. The question is more general -> starting at the very first drive to setup a new unRAID server. I have read that pre-clear only does a stress-test of the drive.
Should Unraid servers avoid SMR (shingled magnetic recording) and only be equipped with CMR (conventional magnetic recording) hard drives? It's best practice to do a preclear on your hard drives in Unraid before you take them out of the plastic shell (shuck them). Thanks for your response ashman, I am not buying used drives but I generally pay approx /TB for the Seagate or Toshiba consumer products. I don't pay the price for the professional or enterprise drives because I just don't think they're necessary for my use case.
